CUSTOMS AND TRADITIONS

Folklore in Quindío.
By Carolina
Legends are an important part of popular culture and tradition. Some have transcended the boundaries of the department, such as those of the chieftain Calarcá. Cacique Calarcá has known stories that describe him as an indigenous warrior with great treasures, who was angry to learn that some Indians mixed their blood with that of the Spaniards. Calarcá died in the struggle to preserve his race. Legend has it that Guaicamarintia, a daughter of the cacique, decided to bury it with all its riches among the rocks of what is now the Peñas Blancas reserve in the municipality of Calarcá.
The coffee in the Quindío.
There is no precision about the origin of the coffee. Some studies locate it in Yemen and others in Ethiopia. There is no certainty as to the exact date when the first coffee trees were planted in the department of Quindío. However, everything indicates that the cultivation began in the second half of the nineteenth century, almost simultaneously with the arrival of the Antioquia´s settlers.
There are different versions on the entry of the plant to Colombia. Some say that its entrance was by the department of the Cauca thanks to the monks; And others, that the entrance was by North of Santander, because the arrival of the coffee to the American continent happened by the islands of the Caribbean.
In 1867, Mariano Ospina Rodríguez, Antioqueño made the first harvests in his department. Simón López, is attributed the expansion of the coffee plantations in Quindío and the north of the Valley.

At the end of the 19th century, the economy began to grow around grain planting, making coffee one of the main Colombian export products. And although the coffee boom has had its difficult times for different circumstances, in Quindío there are always alternatives to not talk about crisis. The coffee culture is always a fundamental motor of development in the region. Proof of this is precisely the tourist activity with coffee as the main theme.
Colombia is the world's largest producer of soft coffee, a feature that is due, among other reasons, to the climate of the mountains of Quindío and to the process of gain, which consists in the careful washing of the fruit to remove mucilage, a viscous substance that changes it's taste.

WHICH SOUVENIRS TO BRING FROM ARMENIA?
A souvenir you should buy, it's homemade coffee. There are several estates that sell their own coffee, or coffee shops. The price is from $ 14,000 to $ 18,000 Colombian pesos, half a pound.
Besides coffee, there are many products with coffee. Example: arequipe with coffee, coffee beans covered in chocolate, coffee cookies, coffee liqueur, etc.
As in many other tourist destinations, Armenia also has a large number of magnets that you can buy. An average price of a magnet is $ 2,000 Colombian pesos, which, of course, can be negotiated. It's Colombia!
In Salento, you can find a great variety of handicrafts. From ceramics to coffee products. There are many national craft shops. It is one of the places with greater supply of souvenirs. We recommend it!
